In the past, spine surgery involved long incisions, muscle disruption and lengthy recovery times. Advances have led to the development of minimally invasive spine surgery performed through smaller “keyhole” incisions with the aid of endoscopic devices for visualization. The muscles are minimally disrupted, pain is reduced and recovery time is rapid as compared to traditional open spine surgery. Minimally invasive spine surgery offers many people relief from scoliosis, bulging or herniated discs and other conditions. This talk focuses on the conditions and people for whom this surgery is well suited. Nortin Hadler knows backaches. For more than three decades as a physician and medical researcher, he has studied the experience of low back pain in people who are otherwise healthy. Hadler terms the low back pain that everyone suffers at one time or another “regional back pain.” In this book, he addresses the history and treatment of the ailment with the healthy skepticism that has become his trademark, taking the “Hadlerian” approach to backaches and the backache treatment industry in order to separate the helpful from the hype.
Basing his critique on an analysis of the most current medical literature as well as his clinical experience, Hadler argues that regional back pain is overly medicalized by doctors, surgeons, and alternative therapists who purvey various treatment regimens. Furthermore, the design of workers’ compensation, disability insurance, and other “health” schemes actually thwarts getting well. For the past half century, says Hadler, back pain and back pa
Part of the award winning public television series Healthy Body/Healthy Mind. Each year, over sixty million Americans suffer from lower back pain and by the age of fifty, eighty-five percent exhibit some disc deterioration of the spine. With age, those little shock absorbers between each vertebra simply wear out from Degenerative Disc Disease. In this episode we’ll learn about new physical therapy techniques and surgical breakthroughs, similar to artificial knee technology, that often reduce or eliminate the pain. It’s like a chiropractor in your home
Designed by a chiropractor, this natural back support system uses your body’s own weight to apply controlled pressure to the spinal vertebrae. As you lie on Spine-Worx, your spine is pressed firmly against the length of its two unique padded and contoured rails, injection-molded to fit the natural shape of the mid- and lower back. The vertebrae in the spine are gradually and gently encouraged to realign into their natural positions, which helps to relieve backpain and improve overall mobility.
The papers in this volume summarize information about the most recent and effective techniques for treating diffcult functional problems and painful situations by using minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques. Spinal endoscopy both for diagnostic and treatment purposes is presented as well as microsurgical operations for spinal problems, intradiscal techniques for the treatment of disc degenerative pathology, and dynamic stabilization techniques together with an up-to-date review of physiopathology of the diseases. New trends in peripheral nerve surgery are presented. Also the problem of traumatic nerve lesions in different anatomical districts is analyzed with special attention on the theme of thoracic outlet syndrome. The posttraumatic aspects of this disease are discussed both in respect of its causative mechanisms, and its medicolegal aspects.
One of the greatest ironies surrounding This Is Spinal Tap is that it’s actually better than many of the recordings it parodies. Songs like “Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight,” “Hell Hole,” “Heavy Duty,” and even “Stonehenge” are fun, 1980s-style rockers that any closet hair-band fan will enjoy, and “Sex Farm” and “Big Bottom” are simply hilarious by any standard. There’s also the hippie-drippy “Listen to Me (the Flower People)” (even funnier if you’ve seen Rob Reiner’s film of the same title), although Michael McKean and Christopher Guest singing “Cry, Cry, Cry All the Way Home” is sadly absent. The CD does lose some of its entertainment value if you haven’t seen the film, but its mix of comedy and unabashed pop metal makes it the perfect party album. –Genevieve Williams
Folic acid is one of the B vitamins Folic acid is one of the B Vitamins. Folic acid is necessary for the metabolic processes in our body. It is also necessary for the production of nucleic acids and the development of hemoglobin in red blood cells. During pregnancy, folic acid is a crucial nutrient and is essential for efficient neural tube development, which forms the brain and spinal cord. Pregnant women with an insufficient intake of folic acid are more likely to give birth prematurely or to deliver babies with low birth weight or with neural tube defects.
This well-written, reliable overview of traumatic spinal cord injury and its treatment is essential reading for all patients, family members, and caregivers who want a better understanding of the condition. In simple, everyday English, it explains the anatomy of the spine, the results of injury, and treatment and management issues encountered during rehabilitation. A glossary of commonly used terms and website resources offer tools for further study, while the latest scientific research helps patients make informed medical decisions that promote optimum healing.

The Disc Low Back Leg Pain

I think this chiropractic lumbar spine poster (not fully shown) is from 1984 but it’s still one of the most popular posters for patients. Nearly everybody visiting the chiropractor can identify with low back pain. Most people have a basic understanding as to what the sciatic nerve is or where it’s located. I have found this poster is great for educating people about a number of concerns related to the spine, spinal cord, spinal nerves and discs. Time for a modernized version.
